- Commonwealth Karate Championships 2008 Edinburgh, Scotland: The Meadowbank stadium in Edinburgh was the venue for the 2008 Commonwealth karate championships which was held over two days; 31st May and 1st June. With over 1,300 competitors from 9 countries of the Commonwealth in attendance including India, South Africa, Canada, Botswana, New Zealand, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It was the largest karate tournament ever held in Great Britain and one of the best organised competitions the squad has ever attended, from the opening ceremony where the competitors where lead into the stadium by the Scots pipe band and introduced to the cheers and applause of the crowds.
First to compete from the EKKA selected team on the opening day was Reisha Hull in the female cadets 16 / 17 yrs -57kg in which she excelled herself fighting through 4 rounds to win her self a place in the final, which she was to win convincingly taking the teams first gold medal and adding the open Commonwealth champion title to her ever growing list of achievements. Emily Griffiths was next on the areas in the senior female -60kg, at under 50kg herself this was to be a challenge but she was to rise to the occasion fighting her way to the final gaining the silver. Chris Harris in the senior men’s section -65kg also fought through to the final which was to be a very close and tight final which went into extra time and he had to settle for the silver on a split decision.
The second day of the championships was the turn of our younger team members. First to compete was Alix Harris in the kata section our only kata competitor from EKKA in the girls 14 / 15 yrs winning through her first round with Unsuh but was unlucky to go out in the second round to South Africa.
Hannah Moody competing in the girls 10 / 11yrs -45kg excelled herself at this championships fighting through to the final improving in every round with ever growing confidence taking EKKA second gold medal. In the 14 / 15yrs girls -53kg we had Alix Harris and Heidi Jay on opposite ends of a large category draw both fighting there ways to the final and well deserved. With Alix taking the silver and Heidi the gold on this occasion.
EKKA had two teams entered at the Commonwealth championships the senior female team Loren Cook, Emily Griffiths, and Reiaha Hull, narrowly missing out on the gold in the final taking a well deserved silver.

The 14 / 15yrs girls team Heidi Jay, Alix Harris and Charlotte Platts was competed on two areas due to the large number of entries the girls winning through the rounds showing real skill meeting South Africa in the final which they went onto win taking the team gold and Commonwealth title 2008.
This was a very special championships which the whole EKKA team was proud to be part of having the chance to compete at an event like this was not to be missed and was a great experience for us all the closing ceremony where Sensei Billy Brennan, president of the Commonwealth Karate Federation, handed over the Commonwealth flag over to India where the next Commonwealth Championships is to be held. Well done to all that competed and attended from the EKKA Karate Association and squad coaches Leonard Austin and Paul Harris.
